We often look for opportunities to explore new talent. One way we do that is to bring someone in for a few weeks to see what they’re made of.
So we invited Marlon Maulsby to join Panmedia for the Holiday Season. The web developer had already spent three days with us last month honing his skills for the WorldSkills International Competition in Shizuoka, Japan, recently. We liked his enthusiasm and enjoyed his industriousness.
Now battle tested and on hiatus before starting a degree program at Vocational Training Development Institute in January, he easily convinced us that he would be a useful intern.
In this photo, Marlon shows off his technical skills with an admiring group of Japanese schoolgirls. He and Febriyanto, an Indonesian web developer with whom he had teamed up, had attracted the attention of the girls because of their inventive quiz. Visitors were required to click on a question mark that revealed one of several web development acronyms such as HTML, CSS, PHP, etc.
Marlon is busy these days learning the finer points of Drupal, the open source content management system Panmedia uses. Under the watchful eye of System Engineer Marc Richards, Marlon has proven to be a quick learner who won't rest until he has fully grasped a concept. He has proven extremely helpful during this end-of-year crunch time and has mastered the ability of learning on the job. He is even working on client sites under development, including the Issa Transport Group, the Private Sector of Jamaica and the Ministry of Health.
Marlon says he is proud to be an ambassador for WorldSkills Jamaica, which allowed him to respresent his country in Japan, where he won the Best of Nation award and met the Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan.
The 21-year-old wants to motivate other young people and help promote skills standards so that Jamaicans can compete globally.
