It was a full day of camaraderie and crazy fun. Panmedia and friends caught cricket fever down at a smartly refurbished Sabina Park for the Windies-Zimbabwe match.
With one win, Windies had to beat the Africans to guarantee entry to the Super 8s. The Zimbabwe team opened the batting confidently. Riding the excitement of the home crowd, however, Windies, struck out the starting batsmen in the first few overs. Soon enough though, Zimbabwe calmed their nerves and began accumulating runs. They finished with a respectable 201 runs.
Our Panmedia group sat high up in the west bleachers, a temporary stand built specifically for CWC 2007. We were packed in tight, listening to a pep band with a wicked drum section and a chorus line keeping rhythm with plastic noisemakers courtesy Cable & Wireless Jamaica. The brass kept the crowd dancing, and it was like one big choir when the band struck up favourite folk songs and old time hymns. Colourful characters kept everyone in a jubiliant mood as they yelled coaching tactics to the Windies. Of course, horns and whistles blared when the Windies licked a four or six.
Needless to say, we had to join in the revelry. We were all jumping up and down, doing the Mexican wave, screaming, waving flags and towels, especially when Gayle hit his three consecutive sixes and raucously when Lara finally won the match with a resounding six.
It was worth seeing animator Kamal Hines get really animated, Systems Engineer Marc Richards waving his Jamaican flag. We left Sabina with smiles and high spirits, rejuvenated for work at Panmedia the next day.
