The Emmys last night honoured Viola Davis as Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series. As the first black woman awarded such, Viola invoked Harriet Tubman and the few opportunities for black women in Hollywood. Her moving acceptance speech brought the audience to tears:

Snapchat will feature Jamaica as a Live Story today! Jamaicans are exicted and are sharing hilarious and serious opinions about what should be featured.
A Live Story is, in Snapchat's words: "a curated stream of user submitted Snaps from various locations and events." Today the location is Jamaica.

Snapchat is a new social media craze where you send videos and pictures that disappear in seconds. You can also post Snap Stories of whatever you feel like sharing with your followers. This app combines the need for attention and instant gratification with our technology-induced short attention spans.

Jamaican standards of beauty are paradoxically affected by both Eurocentric and Afrocentric influences. We praise the slender (often light-skinned) woman with straight or curly hair, but also embrace the voluptuous dark-skinned woman. The rub comes because the Eurocentric standard of beauty is often heralded as somehow better than the Afrocentric. And because western stakeholders control pageants like Miss Universe, their standards of beauty are upheld.
Kinesha Goldson, an MJU contestant, penned a letter to the Editor of the Gleaner, taking issue with how the competition and by extension, the rest of Jamaica, approaches "beauty."

We’ve had a fantastic week at the World Championships in Beijing, (placing second overall!) and the Internet has been blowing up with excitement. From live tweeting the races to critiques of each Jamaican athlete and their competitors, Jamaicans have come together online in shows of solidarity, but also fickleness.
