Digital services and devices now dominate daily life. Smart phones are essential for most professionals and the Apple ipad, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, and the Kindle have joined the never-ending list of screens we find ourselves staring at frequently.

Of course, the more we enjoy engagement with these devices, the more likely it is we may suffer from eyestrain. To further your enjoyment and keep your eyesight in working order, here are a few tips that may be helpful.

Clean Your Screen
Touch screens are super trendy, but they quickly accumulate fingerprints and smudges. This can obscure your view and render images as unfocused, causing eyestrain.  Carry a cleaning cloth and use often to wipe the screen.

Customize viewing settings
The device manual can show you how to adjust settings to be more comfortable for your eyes.  You can change font size, contrast, and screen brightness.

Position yourself properly
For desktop monitor or tablet devices stay 20 to 26 inches away, but phones need to be about a foot from our eyes because of their smaller screens.  Keep the screen just below your field of vision, as you would desktop monitors.

Avoid prolonged use
The best way to get the most out of all the things you want to do with all those digital devices is to be perky when you’re working. And taking frequent breaks keeps you that way. Go look at a painting, or listen to a favorite piece of music, or anything else that lets your relax.

No matter how far technology advances our eyes are indispensable tools. Make sure you can use them for a lifetime.
