Our second Panmedia Salute goes to two regional journalists. Lennox Grant, who often helps us understand the Trinidad state of mind, and Jamaican media consultant Wyvolyn Gager will monitor press coverage in the Guyana elections this year and assess compliance with the Media Code of Conduct.

The Guyana Election Commission’s appointment of the two veteran journalists is the third stage of its plan to help the media contribute meaningfully to the elections.  Stage one was setting the Media Code and stage two was the launch of a Media Monitoring Unit in February.  The Unit will help Grant and Gager with research and data collection.

In April, the two will make their first exploratory trip to Guyana and will stay there from June until the elections.

Guyana's media houses that signed the Media Code chose Grant and Gager from a list of Caribbean journalists to referee their performance.

Grant, is former chief editor of both the Trinidad Guardian and the Express and is now a radio and television commentator. Gager was the youngest and first woman ever to be appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the Gleaner in Jamaica.
