Online dating sites have revolutionized that scary human venture we call matchmaking. They are as ubiquitous as pick up bars and by everyone’s count make it easier and more tailored for singles to meet. Even Jamaican dating has gone cyber, with popular sites such as jamaicandating.com, jampersonals.com, dating-jamaica.com and jamaicansinglesonline.com.
Most of these dating sites are free. New visitors/ non-members can see a short list of their prospects and are then prompted to create an account to view more or make contact. Some sites like Jamaicapersonals.com don’t show visitors any prospects unless they create an account.
Not surprisingly, all these sites initially have their search settings for male users, on the assumption that the user is a male looking for a female. That is likely to change as soon as more females shed age old inhibitions and become as aggressive as males in pursuit of the opposite sex.
The sites offer a variety of features to users. Jamaicandating.com, for example, says it uses an “extensive list of questions...on topics ranging from leisure activities to politics to the personal domain.” These questions presumably will help users to find better matches.
Jamaicapersonals.com offers links to dating chats, information on dating scams and a live adult cam. Dating-jamaica.com offers a chat, hosts a forum, allows users to login with Facebook and has a subscription service to get matches via email.
The local sites are quick to follow the international dating sites that are constantly pushing the envelope in their search for better feature sets and new techniques for finding better matches.
This cyber dating seems to work for some people. At least one of the sites has reported getting feedback from users who have moved from dating to marriage.
We can probably safely assume that just as Jamaicans are constantly seeking education and work abroad that we must also be using international dating sites to find mates. There are no figures on this of course, but we would guess that popular international dating sites like Match.com and eHarmony have seen people from this island.
Below are some figures from alexa.com that give an idea of usage for those dating sites directed at Jamaicans.
Jamaica Rank | Reputation | Audience* | |
jamaicandating.com | 2, 175 | 28 | Males, 55-64 |
jampersonals.com | unavailable | 11 | Males, 45-54 |
dating-jamaica.com | unavailable | 5 | unavailable |
jamaicansinglesonline.com | unavailable | 1 | unavailable |
Information: alexa.com |
Reputation: A measure of a sites reputation - The number of links to the site from sites visited by users in the Alexa traffic panel. Links that were not seen by users in the Alexa traffic panel are not counted. Multiple links from the same site are only counted once.
*Relative to the general internet population, that age group and gender is greatly over-represented on that site.
We also learn from Alexa.com, that there are some interesting key words visitors use to find these sites: Jamaican eiry man, ethnicity, race, malian romance and sierra leone booty.
As international matchmaking sites get more creative in the features they offer and new ways of finding better matches we can expect the Jamaican sites to follow fashion. And we might find that online dating is the new way to rush a gal.
