Most of an entire generation has never seen Junkanoo. They do not know the lyrics to Christmas a come or the joy of walking Grand Market all night. We seem to be losing ourselves in this globalized and monoculture world. Indeed, our Christmas season has become as commercial as elsewhere and less Jamaican.

Cable television and the internet’s influence are diluting our rich culture and inserting nuff things foreign. We seem to savor the tastes of others greedily. See all the snowmen in Christmas decorations, turkeys on dinner tables and apples and grapes in lunchboxes.

Christmas is a time for family, friends, and loved ones to come together to celebrate. For many, the holiday season is filled with joy, laughter, and love. But it can also be a difficult time for some. Christmas heightens the stresses of our everyday life. It often makes us anxious about the  year’s goals we didn’t achieve, holiday’s expectations we harbor, and expenses those expectations will incur. With such demands on our pocket it’s easy to lose the fiscal prudence we maintained all year.

Jamaicans abroad get love and acceptance from people all over the world. Our exuberance and patriotism are hard to ignore. The soft power we proudly exert with our culture drives people’s curiosity and interest in our country, attracting more than four million tourists annually. They come for Reggae and Dancehall, our beautiful white sand beaches, rich Blue Mountain Coffee, well-marinated jerk chicken and curry goat, and, of course the warmth and high-spiritedness of our people.

Jamaican truck drivers are infamous for their road antics. The fast driving, horn honking, gear changing and  jakes jakesing, command our attention often, and inspire glee in many whose usual response is "Machine!"

Showing them love seems to extend beyond the streets, however, as TikTok trucker videos are getting lots of views. There are at least 32 accounts posting these videos, with an average of 5,000 followers each.

The videos range from the sublime to the ridiculous. Some show engine power, some show driving skills, and others show the madness on our roads. As a marketing device, the videos seem mostly to communicate that truckers are a stable...
